Newsletter - April 2008
Welcome
It's been a while since the last update, so this is what's been going on since December.
Ordnance Survey Maps
Up until recently, the full walk overviews on the site had a Virtual Earth view of the walk with an overlayed route if GPS data was available. This has now been changed to use the MultiMap API which allows us to display real Ordnance Survey maps. The route is still overlayed where GPS data is attached to the route.
An example of this can be seen on "The Great Orme, Llandudno".
Sidebar on other sites
If you've used the interactive walking map and clicked through to a walk that's on another website, you'll have noticed that this opened the page in a new window and it didn't integrate with GrabYourBoots.com. We've changed this so that walks on other sites now have a sidebar which allows you to easily return to GrabYourBoots.com or click through to other nearby walks.
On the sidebar you'll find:
- An link to the Ordnance Survey map of the area if we're able to determine where it is (or a random map from our database if not)
- A list of walks in the area - this is from the same list of walks as the walking map.
Walking Events
Throughout the year there are many walking events across the country. We've started to collect a list of these and are now showing these in the events section.
If you know of any UK walking events which we don't have listed then please send us the details. We'd love this to be the most complete list of events around, but we appreciate that at the moment it's some way off. With your help however, this could be possible.
RSS Feeds
The site has had RSS feeds for quite a while now which allows you to keep up to date with the latest walks and newsletters added to the site, however, these haven't been used very much by members.
If you're not familiar with RSS and use iGoogle then simply click this button to subscribe for free to our feeds:
. If you don't use iGoogle, then simply look for the RSS icon on the homepage and add that to your RSS reader.
User survey
Finally, we're trying to understand what visitors and members of the site would like to see added. We've created a survey which we'd like as many people as possible to complete. We'll use the results to add features or help to improve what we currently have. It'll only take a few minutes to complete and is completely anonymous. Thanks for your help; click here to start the survey.
Until next time, thanks for reading.
