Welcome
Another busy month behind the scenes at GrabYourBoots.com. It's also been a month of fairly poor weather so it's not been great for getting outdoors. However, there have been some walks added to the site since the last update such as:
- Blakemere Moss at Delamere Forest Park
- Ewloe Castle and Wepre Woods
- Moel Famau
- World's End along the Eglwyseg Mountain
- Sychnant Pass to Tal y Fan (along part of the North Wales Path)
- Snowdon from Llanberis
Tags
In addition to the interactive walking map, we've added 'tags' to the full walks available on the site so that similar walks can be grouped together, such as walks in a particular county, or along a well known national trail. Any walk author can tag their own walks from the 'overview' tab of their walks when they're logged in. Tags should generally be one or two words to describe the location of the walk (such as England or Wales), rather than 'short' or 'long' which can be seen from the length.Waypoint positions
As we've said before, you can add your own walks to the site and upload GPS data of the route. Previously though, you had to enter waypoints along the route using OS grid references. We've now changed this if you're uploading a photo as well to determine the location of where the photo was taken by using your GPS data. This works for most digital cameras which save 'EXIF' data (basically extra information you don't normally see) with the photo. Please remember though that your camera must be set to the correct date/time before you start your walk otherwise you'll have problems.
If you don't have a digital camera or you add a walk without GPS data then you can still add a waypoint by typing the OS grid reference as before.
Discounted Ordnance Survey maps
It's a good idea to take a proper map with you when out walking. The Ordnance Survey Explorer range is ideal as the maps show you rights of way, footpaths and sufficient detail at 1:25,000 scale. The cost of these though is generally £7.99 or more. If you're looking for cheaper maps, then Amazon is a great source as they are generally cheaper, and some are available second hand for a great bargain!
Definitely worth a look.
Thanks for reading, we hope you have some great walks!
