Around Big Mere from Marbury to Wirswall By richard
Waypoint 1. Grid reference SJ559459
Park near the village hall in Marbury, then follow the road as if you're heading towards the church.

Opposite the T-junction you will reach, there's a stile. Follow the footpath sign leading across the field to the right.

The Big Mere will come in to view, as will the destination at the top of the hill in the distance which can be seen by looking for a mobile phone radio mast.

Some of the fields may have cattle in them, so take care not to disturb them too much.

On the other side of the stile leaving the field is a narrow country road. Turn left and follow the road up the hill.

You will see a road sign on entering the village of Wirswall. Just after this on the left is a footpath sign. You will see a metal gate. To the right of this is a stile leading in to another field.

Go straigh across the field climbing the hill, where you will see great views over South Cheshire on a clear day. Marbury church will be visible as will the Big Mere.

From the top of the hill facing downhill, you will see a stile to the right of the field.

Keep following the footpath, through the gate.

Here you will be at the side of Big Mere and be able to see Marbury Church on top of the hill. Follow the path along the side of the mere.

Along the way is a huge tree which has a hollow base. It's possible to actually go inside!

The path in the church grounds leads around the church and then out on the other side down a short track.

On reaching the road, turn left and then turn right at the next junction. The village hall will come in to view on the right.
